I would like to set up my windows xp pro system so that it
has multiple accounts. When I did this it did not work to
well because after the accounts were set up they had
limited ability to custimize that account. I could not
even install from cd because windows would complain I
needed admin access. How do I go about customizing each
account (gaming account, web browsing account, work
account, etc.) when everytime I try to do something it
just says I have to be admin. I am admin on a admin
account so I have access to admin.

One other thing, any sites/free info anywhere that I can
get so that I can read about how to be a system admin? I
think If I knew that then I would not be having this
problem.

Thanks,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

There are a number of sites with different views on how to
run XP and/or Windows.

I will leave the answer to that part of your post to others
to provide you with their favorite links.

What you are experiencing when trying to set up the
accounts results from a couple things. Perhaps if you
keep these in mind then things will make a little more
sense.
1. In general, anything that can have an impact on multiple
accounts, like network config, software installed that tries
to install for all accounts, etc. is reserved as an administrative
duty and so Windows XP tries to keep non-admin accounts from
being able to do those things.
2. Some software is not written with the XP specification in
mind, and so fails to run as a non-admin. Such software can
sometimes be fixed but it is really the responsibility of the
software vendor to fix this for their customers.
