You need to reinstall the drivers from the CD that you would have got when
you bought the computer. The CD is maybe called the 'motherboard disk', or
'Utilities', or 'Drivers' or something like that. I'm not talking about
your Windows disk.

I have had this problem several times. Almost always, going to MS
Updates, selecting hardware updates (optional), you will see an update
for your audio device. This usually resolves these issues.

From your audio controller's manufacturer's web site. Be sure to
download and install the WinXP-specific audio drivers, as provided by
your sound card's manufacturer.

It's best not to get hardware drivers from the Windows update site, unless
it's an MS manufactured device. They don't always have the latest drivers.
Best is to get the driver from the device manufacturer's web site, the
computer OEM web site if it's a major OEM such as Dell or HP (especially if
it's a laptop) or from the device manufacturer's web site if it's an on
board device.

We have had many posts in here were someone installed a driver update from
WU and had problems.

OK. Thanks for the info. I just remember running into this exact
situation before with my Dell machine, and the audio drivers from
Dell's website did nothing (as the audio device itself was installed
correctly), and the drivers from the manufacturer of the motherboard
did nothing (for the same reason). But when I went to MS Updates,
there was an available driver for some type of audio device, and this
resolved my problems. In this case, I would recommend trying all of
the steps previousely listed before going to WU then, and if your
problem doesn't go away, THEN try WU as a last resort.

Agreed - there might be a situation where the driver on WU works. I'm just
pointing out that as a general action one should avoid WU for drivers, going
to the other sources first. Too often the drivers on WU are older drivers
and cause problems.
