I had to reload Wnidows 98. I then upgrade windows 98 and
IE to the latest releases. Now when I try to open a
second IE window, it pops up on the bottom status bar and
then replaces the window I already had opened. This means
I am only able to have one window open at at time. And
since it does replace the window, I am unable to use the
back button to go to the previous window.
Thanks,
Jim

You should be able to use the back button. Hold down the CTRL key when you
click on a link. A second browser will appear.

Warren,
Thanks for the reply, but it does no good. The back
button is there, it is just not active because there is
nothing to go back to. From Ryan Sims post just before
mine, we both have same problem. I have disabled my
software that blocks pop ups, which is working since this
post screen pop'd up ok. holding down ctrl does no good.

I found another post on this board that talked about the
internet option, tools, internet options, advance,
browser, enable third party browser extensions. I
unchecked this option, and am now able to get multiple
browser windows opened.

Then use BHO (Browser Helper Object) Demon to find out what extensions
you have installed. Sounds like one of them is altering IE's behavior.
Could be spyware. Could be something you installed that is supposed to
alter IE's behavior.

Okay, ya got me confused.

"...when I try to open a second IE window ..."

How? Ctrl-N within IE? File -> New -> Window? Right-click on a link
in IE and select "Open in New Window"? Clicking on links in e-mails?
Clicking on links in Google (which always reuse the same 2nd window *if*
you enable the preference option to open in a different window). Just
how do you [try to] open a 2nd window?

"... it pops up on the bottom status bar ..."

What is "it"?

"... replaces the window I already had opened."

More likely that window is getting *reused*. Replaced would mean the
prior window gets closed and a new one shows up.

From: "michel guimond" submitted in a news group.
Subject: When I launch an instance of IE6, it seems to launch the next
instance of the window, but then it closes it and launches the new one over
the existing one. Thus, I can't have multiple instances of I.E. running.
Very frustrating.

Solution: Yahoo Companion.
I uninstalled it and I'm now able to open new windows (Ctrl-N or
File/new/window)

Rule out Parasites.
IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.
