I just ordered, "end-of-line-stock" a 256MB Gainward FX PowerPack ultra/780 TV-DVI (FX 5600) ... £52.88 inc vat & delivery.

:D

I don't care it's not the latest, greatest graphics card out there, I just like it. :p

:)

That sounds like a bargain to me :D

Do you play many games on your PC?

Its good for the price, but dont expect to be playing Doom 3 with any of the lovilies turned on, or Far Cry as where on the subject =/ .

But for that price, you would expect to get a FX5200!

You'll have yo do a 3DMark03 run when ya got it, see what ya get.

Me friend gets around 2500 with an FX5600 on an AMD 2800XP, 1 stick of 512 (333).

You can download 3DMark03 for free, but its 178mb! Or you could just buy the latest issue of PC Format (issue 164) and its on the cover DVD (not CD version).

:o nope, not many, well ... one actually. :D

:D actually ... it will be replacing the FX5200 (£35) that's in my system. :p

I've never used, or intend to use, any "benchmark" program (with limited functionality) ... and FPS games are not very good for a one-handed person. ;)

i got a fx5200

its good does the job, because i only really play one game championship manager 03/04........:)

just cant wait for CM5!!!!!

That is the only "Age of..." game I haven't played! Is it anything like the past "Age of Empires / Kings" games?

Excellent game! Makes me wanna upgrade my graphics card, but I have very limited funds :(

You don't come across many girls who can beat their boyfriends at Command and Conquer Generals... ;)

Hello sexy bex, you'll be surprised, my dear Lady beats me often. :D

Ian, sorry, I've not tried the others.

Our Mucks is full of surprises, just don't ask him about the gerbil and Thursday evenings....

Mucks, that's a bargain, well done. I'm actually looking for a cheap video card myself atm, preferably Nvidia, as I cobbled together all my spare bits and figured I could make a box just for Linux. I can share a Monitor (Iiyama, 2 inputs) but I still need a grafix card and a hard disk.

There's a fella selling a Gainward FX5700 for £65.00 on another UK Forum, he has no takers yet, I was thinking of offering him 50/55, what do you think? Or can you get another one of those things?

Oh, and in case you're wondering why I've suddenly developed a preference for Nvidia over Radeon, it's easier to set up an Nvidia card in Linux, the drivers are easier to install and configure.

Actually, I don't know what they've got left, but pick one and I'll see what we can do. ;)

You must have pretty good parts to be cobbled together for them to deserve a 5700 - i'd just shove a 128mb 5200 in and be done with it!!

just don't ask him about the gerbil and Thursday evenings....
This would be the ONE time i hope there is NOT a story behind this... LOL
**Chris must now stop giggling**

I do rather fancy:

256MB XFX Geforce FX 5600 VIVO

40.00

I intend to get two small hard disks, 20Gb - 40Gb and mount them in HDD caddies to swap between Win 98 and Mandrake 10.

Win 98 will only be for old games so that card should cope with them admirably. And Linux will be used only for 'serious' stuff, no games. I quite like having a VIVO facility.

So what do I do? PM you? Or could you order it and I'll send you the loot plus the p & p to cover from Cardiff to London?

I'm quite serious Mr Mucks and if you can help I thank you :)

Chris, this is what the system would be, I picked up the CPU & RAM for £32.50 for both at Hexus.

Black Generic midi tower case with 2 x 80mm Pabst fans.
Jeantech 300W PSU
Abit KR7A-R Motherboard
Duron 1.4Ghz CPU
256Mb Crucial PC2100
Zalman copper finned cooler with bracket mounted 92mm fan
Black Liteon DVD ROM drive
Black Sony Floppy Drive
Philips Dynamic Edge 4.1 Sound Card
Belkin NIC Card
IBM Black keyboard
Packard Bell optical Mouse
Labtec 'Spin 65' powered stereo speakers, black.
Black rounded IDE & Floppy Cables.
Shared Iiyama Pro 454 Monitor.

So I need a grafix card and two small-ish hard drives.

I also have a Creative PC128 sound card if Linux doesn't like the Philips card, but I think it should be OK.

Well i might be intrested in one of them 9800pros. Its a mate that wants it, i'm gonna have to see. He should want it, as hes been looking for ages.

Reef: The supplier is CCL. They do sell to the public, but those prices are for trade customers only, you need to be at least VAT registered and preferably a limited company before you can purchase at trade prices.

Mucks is offering a favour, as he has a trade account with CCL.

Oddly enough, I should be VAT registered myself before the year is out - but not yet.
