My automatic update in Windows XP giving me trouble. It
gives me error code 0x80244001. It says that it cannot
find MSXML3.dll and therefore it cannot update Windows
XP. However, MSXML3.dll is ahppily sitting in my Windows
directory. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi:
First Windows update has changed and has new V5 protocols, BILTS(Background
intelligence ect, ) has to be on "automatic"-there is a new BILTS program,
you can get it from the windows update web site, If the file is corrupted,
you have to use "system file checker" sfc/scannow in the cme window, if this
does not do it, then you search for an update to MSXML3.dll , as far as
"extracting" this file from the winxp cd rom and overwriting so thats its
"new" , this was available on win 98se, however, I have not seen anyone
accomplish this with winxp , thus this feature may not be available anymore,
the last way to fix it , is format the drive and make a "clean install".

Register MSXML3.dll and see if it helps:

Start > Run > type in - %windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe
%windir%\system32\MSXML3.dll >ok
