If you could share what version of Microsoft Office Word is being used to
open the document, someone might be able to offer more specific options.
This also depends on your operating system capabilities. It is possible and
shouldn't be a problem. In general, make sure that the fonts in the older
documents are available in your current system, because sometimes empty
squares, or strange code appear, in place of original text. You also don't
want to risk corrupting the given documents. You might look into Microsoft
Office Word Viewer 2003, in the downloads section, to see if this is an
applicable program.

Hi Joanne-

Just to be on the safe side, make acopy on your hard drive first. Then
attempt to open the file as you normally would fro the Open dialog box in
Word. If the file isn't visible in the file list, go to the bottom of the box
& open the Files of Type: list, then choose Word 6.0/95 for Windows &
Macintosh.

Hi Cybertaz. thanks for your help it was very helpful. I am now trying to
find a better program to create documents so that I may use a spell check,
thesaurus, etc. I was used to using the windows programs like excel,
powerpoint and word, but this windows xp is not quite useful for creating
documents or I may be just unaware of how to use it...ha ha ha. Are there
any free programs for writing professional documents?

Don't give on up Word just yet. (This is especially true if you really
need those old Word 6 documents, since you can't expect a different
application to read the files any better than Word does.) Instead,
post a new message describing the specific problems you are
experiencing with your version.
