MSN Messenger on Intranet only

Is there any way to use the MSN Messenger on our internal
network ONLY - rather than connecting to each other via
the Internet?

It is possible to run an internal network using Windows Messenger with an
Exchange 2000 IM, Live Communication Server 2003 or a 3rd party sip server.
