MSN 6.1 automatic logon

When I start the pc, it automatically logs on to the internet. The first
thing in the Norton connections log identifies an IP address of
207.46.104.20 which resolves to Messenger.Hotmail.com.

I have Messenger set to run when Windows starts but that shouldn't cause an
automatic internet logon should it? Is there something else I should check
(or uncheck) to stop this happening?

You need to turn off automatic sign-in http://tinyurl.com/ywo8t

Thanks for the thought but surely that option is to stop Messenger signing
in automatically once there's an internet connection. I have no problem with
that but what I don't want (and seem to have) is Messenger forcing an
internet connection when windows starts.

I suppose I could turn off "run messenger when windows starts" but then I
have to start it manually when I want it.

Unfortunately I think this is an inherent feature of Windows i.e. when it
detects a call on TCP/IP it automatically dials. I suspect Messenger checks
for a connection by making the call on TCP/IP first, hence it's a kinda
Catch 22 situation. Therefore you need to solve the problem from the angle
of disabling autoconnect, or equally just prevent Messenger from starting.

May have too keen to blame Messenger - I tried uninstalling MSN 6.1 and,
guess what, pc still auto dials in when windows starts. Trouble is there's
nothing that I can find that really identifies which program is causing it.

Are you running any kind of time synchronisation program? This used to do it
on mine.

Failing that run MSInfo, and work through the running tasks to see if
there's a likely candidate.

Not that I know of. I do have two networked pcs which share an internet
connection but the 2nd pc is not switched on so can't see how that's the
culprit.

Will have a go with msinfo.
