msmsgs.exe is running as a process, though Windows Messenger has been closed

Some time ago I did an inventory of all the then-running "processes," and I
did not note msmsgs.exe at that time. I may have just overlooked it.
I have set Windows Messenger NOT to run when Windows loads and NOT to run in
the background.
Does anyone know if it's "normal" for msmsgs.exe to be running all the time,
whether the application is running or not?
BTW, the Process List at Answers that Work identifies this as the MSN
Messenger. That threw me off because I don't have any of the MSN components
installed.
Thanks for any insight.

msmsgs.exe is windows Messenger, msnmsgr.exe is MSN Messenger.
msmsgs.exe starts everytime you run IE/OE/Outlook (and I can't find a
way to stop it - it causes me a big problem).

Use msconfig and uncheck msnsgs so it does not start. Make sure to turn it
off in outlook or outlook express also. Or if you want to uninstall it:
Close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed
instructions and screenshots, go to:

Go to Programs File locate Messenger Folder and rename it to something else.
That's how I stopped it loading.

Hey, thanks for the tip :-) When I was trying to diabled it I read
somewhere that IE/OE/Outlook *needed* it running, implying that those
programs wouldn't start if msmsgs.exe was missing, guess I should have
just tried?.

There are two products, one Windows Messenger that comes with XP; one
MSN messenger which you have to install (and is rather easily installed
unintentionally in the mistaken view that it is an upgrade of the
Windows one). Windows messenger may be being started by Outlook Express
when it loads: ensure that in OE Tools - Options the box to
'Automatically log on to Windows Messenger' is not checked; and that in
its View - Layout that 'Contacts' is not checked (they are managed by
Messenger)

Hi, this can happen if you've Norton av and have it scanning incoming files
as well.....
