Hi,

I need to componentize Quicktime, and have managed to package this into a
installable MSI which works fine, but i now need to make a component of it.
Is there a MSI to INF convertor, or some way to bring it into designer? This
will save me days of trawling, copying and pasting, since the designer
interface is not the best ....

cheers

aaron,

There is not MSI importer available for XPE.
If you managed to create the installable MSI, then you probably know all the app files&registry settings enough to easy create the
component with CD.

Check out this link for some useful MSI tools: http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msi/tips.htm (check AaBuildPackageReport and MSI
to XML converter). It is not what you asked for but may be helpful anyway.

Or you can use a FBA Generic command to do a silent MSI installation during FBA.

Hi,

If i install the Windows Installer service, this adds 40mb of files which i
really could do without, COM+, ODBC stuff, Windows core etc, which seems
overkill to install a 10MB application. Is there an easier / cut down way of
doing this? Using the quicktime installer requires 40MB of support files also
to be able to install it.

This seems a drawback in xpe, which i hope they fit in version 2. It may be
componentized, but a large number of the core compnents which you need to
really do anything require upwards of 40, 50 or 100 MB to function ...

The MSI reader you pointed out is good, but does not tell me where all the
files should go, how to register the components properly, and where the keys
go exactly in the registry (i just get the key names)

I tried to find the structure of an MSI to improve this, but could not find
one ....

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Elvis,

I feel your pain but there is no Quicktime component read-to-use :-(

So, you've got a standard option for the XPe componentization: FileMon/Regmon/InCtrl5 (RegSnap).
Use these tools to find out all the necessary files and registry entries.

Btw, I'd be worried about the dependencies of WIS. The Quicktime itself would require a lot of dependencies to be in the image.

Could you put that MSI file up for download somewhere? I need it for
a project i'm working on.

Thanks
