What are the pros and cons of archiving emails in .msg format vs .pst format?
What is considered 'best practice' for each of these formats?

A .msg file is merely a message that has been dragged out og Outlook to the
Windows file system. It in no way can be considered an "archive". The word
"archive" has a specific meaning in the context of Outlook. An archive PST
is a Personal Folders file that Outlook manages by moving into it items from
other Personal Folders files that have aged past a user-defined date. So,
technically, an arhive must be a PST.

However, I think you're using the word archive in a looser fashion and mean
"some place to store Outlook Items outside of the main folders so they don't
appear in Outlook but so that they can be referenced in the future." I
believe storing aged material in PSTs is a better way to go because it'll
appear in Outlook as it was stored originally if you ever need to reference
it again. You can use Outlook's AutoArchive feature or you can simply open
the archive, drag-and-drop new material, and then close it again.
