Using XP SP 2. Message reads: The Microsoft Protection Service has notified
the user of an action as directed by its policy. (Localized versions of
this event appear in the binary data of this event.)
Message:User.msg.block
Policy:Windows SSFW
Rule:RuleApps.Blocked
Application:C:/ProgramFiles/Real/RealPlayer/realplayer.exe
ActionOcurrence:1

I get this message 50 ormore times a day. How can I set Real Player to stop
trying to access the internet when I am not using it?

Thank you.

First, \realplayer.exe should be in
C:\program files\real\realplayer.exe
not
C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplayer.exe

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Update whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

I started up in safe mode, and ran both Windows Defender and Ad-Aware.
Neither found an error.

Windows Live One Care will not open in safe mode.

What should I try next? Thanks again.

It seems that c:\program files\real\realplayer\realplayer.exe is a legit
location

The problem is that realplayer.exe is a POS and thinks that it needs to
start when Windows boots and thinks that it needs internet access at that
time.

To stop it from starting at boot...

1. Launch RealPlayer
2. Click on the Tools and choose Preferences
3. Under the Automatic Services category, choose Message Center
4. Press the button marked "Configure Message Center"
5. UNCHECK the option labeled Checking - Check for new messages
6. Choose Yes when the warning pops-up

Yep, 'AOL, QuickTime & Real Player' - 3 applications that can't
shut up and sit down. Need an additional Program Group to keep
them in titled "Run ONLY when Needed".

I won't have any of those three pieces of crap. ;-) As far as I am
concerned, QuickTime & Real Player are spyware.

While waiting for your answer, I went to the "answersthatwork.com" task
library and researched realshed.exe. The long dissertation there convinced
me to "end process" through Task Manager. That did stop the error messages.
However, I am glad to know about the permanent fix you gave me.

"Real Time" and "Quick" have been on every computer I have ever owned. I
had always supposed they were provided by Microsoft. After reading your last
note, Mr. Vogel, I will immediately remove those 2 problems from my system.

Thanks again for your help.

I was being a little bit facetious with my comment about QuickTime &
RealPlayer being spyware. But I was serious about myself not having either
one of them.

QuickTime is by Apple Computer Inc.

RealPlayer is by Real, I have no idea who they are, nor do I care.
