I'm using Windows XP Pro. and I need to know if its
possible, and how to restart my computer in MSDOS mode.

Thanks in advanced.

Greetings --

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used or included MS-DOS. The closest they have is the
Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."

No, it is not possible. Windows XP is not based on DOS, and does
not include DOS.

The only way to do what you want is to boot from a DOS diskette.
However if your drive is NTFS, that will not allow you to see the
drive, unless you use a third-party program like NTFSDOS.

I could be wrong but I am sure I am not when I say you can't anymore. The
nearest you can get
is by going to start\run then typing cmd which will bring up a dos window.

Can you please clarify what you are asking? Is it:

- while in (what you call) MSDOS mode (the command prompt box) you want
to restart the computer?

..... if yes, then use the "shutdown" command

- When you do a restart, you want the machine to boot-up into running a
vesrion of MS-DOS

..... if yes ... only possible if you provide MS-DOS in bootable form on
the computer separate from XP as it is not part of Windows XP.

The only way by default assuming you have XP as your only OS, is to boot
from a dos bootdisk.

No, this doesn't bring up a DOS window. It opens a command line
interpreter window. Oh, it resembles a DOS window, but it's not.
