I have Win XP Pro SP1 from MSDN downloaded. ( I think this is important)
Too many problems with a simple Upgrade

Okay, I had to break down and do a clean install
Now I have a working version of Win XP Pro

I now want to load MS Patches (Critical Updates)
Fearing the worst I decided not to connect my PC to the Net just yet
I used my other PC and Downloaded a few of them to a CD so I can update my system prior to touching the net
I tried at least 3 Critical Updates that I know I need from the first attempts at the Upgrade

I receive the following error exactly as it now appears on the screen

SETUP ERROR
" KB823980 Setup cannot update a checked(debug) system with a free(retail) version of KB823980, or vice versa.

Does this mean I can't use the typical AutoUpdates
Is there a different method to get the updates through MSDN?

FYI: I ran these as administrator as well
I turned on the WinXP firewall and briefly attempted to run AutoUpdate (as administrator) with no joy
I let it find all of the critical updates I needed and tried one or two individually and they all failed to install. The website gave no particular reason for the failure

Help
Thanks

You downloaded the wrong version. You need a normal version. Not a version for debugging. MSDN incl retail versions as well.
