Dean Macinskas

Hello,

I'm trying to install MSDE on my machine (tools already installed). When I
run setup, the installer thrashes a bit then displays "Product: Microsoft
SQL Server Desktop Engine -- Setup failed to configure the server.
Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs for more information.".
This same message is in the application log accessible by Event viewer.
Apparently an error "1013" is posted, and when I ask EV to give additional
info it goes to the MS site and reports "no information available".

What are the "server error logs" or the "setup error logs"? Where are they
found? I'm stuck!!

Thanks for any help.

Dean,

A tip from a recent thread: double check if you have File Sharing feature included and enabled on your XP Pro machine.

KM,

I apologise for being dense, but I thought file sharing was automatic - I
certainly don't see it listed as such in the "Services" window. All of the
normal default shares are listed (ADMIN$, C$, D$, IPC$).

What am I missing?

Regards,
Dean

Dean,

What I meant was if you go to your active (or only) network adapter Properties, on the general tab you should see a list of services
and the "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks" option should be set (checked) there. Also, the "Server" service should be
started and running.

If you happened to have all this set, then I can only think of monitoring your installation with tools like Regmon and Filemon to
see what's missing.
