A file called mscr.exe was downloaded this morning onto my machine (I think
during a windows update download) and it seems to run only when internet
explorer is running. I don't know what the file is doing but it us using up
between 80 and 100% of my CPU resource, which normally bubbles around in
single figures. Should I be worried? Is it a virus? What is it doing? Can I
safely delete it?

Any help/comments/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Charles

Have you virus checked your system with the latest definitions for your Anti
Virus program?

Also please try these programs to check for any spyware that may be on your
system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

Having given up on Norton Antivirus last week I have installed PCCillin from
Trend Micro. It seems to be catching loads of stuff, including spyware. It is
up to date - it updated its definitions a few hours ago.

It seems strange that my machine is fine except when I am running Internet
Explorer when this application fires up and stars using up the CPU. The file
is in the folder Windows\driver cache.

Have you heard of the file? I am inclined to try and delete it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Charles.

That folder holds a couple of .CAB files, but mscr.exe isn't in either of
them. I really find much info. on mscr.exe. Perhaps it may be caught with
one of the Adware programs and deleted.

Thanks. I have moved the offending file to the recycle bin and all seems to
be ok again. Thanks for the advice.
