I had a problem with Norton Internet Security and they asked me to stop
running some of the entries in the configuration window under the Start up
tab and gave me a document to follow. This I did very carefully and it
cleared the Norton problem but now I have dozens of other problems. How can I
reinstate the entries and is there any special order, how do I know wether
they should be automatic or running etc. Some of the effects since the change
,
1)Colour of the task bar changed
2) Computer does not recognise the sound card
3) or the printer and scanner
4) Maxter one touch 111, cannot Enumerate Devices.
5) SyncService as encountered a problem and needs to close.

I expierenced some of the same problems, with less severity, when Nortons
Antivirus was due to be updated in 2005. I found out Nortons is a resource
hog, it changes your registry, and, in my opinion, makes the commputer
function as Nortons requires it to. My solution: I created a restore point
then uninstalled Nortons and made sure everything pertaining to
nortons/symatec was off my computer. I cleaned out the files, history, and
cookies then defraged the HDD. I installed AVG Free Antivirus to check it
out. I eventually bought AVG. It works. I can tell a difference in the
computer speed alone. I hope this helps you.

If you mean you used MSConfig to stop those from running, just
rerun it again and turn them back on. You can do them all at
once or one at a time until you find the one (if there is only
one) causing the problems.
Start|Run, type msconfig, hit Enter.

Thanks I may do the same. It also left me with no historical restore points,
at the moment I would like to (for want of a better word) reset msconfig.

Thanks
I am over 80 I use this as an excuse but I cannot see how to turn them back
on. could you help with a little more detail. I have no wish to make the
problem worse with my clumsiness.
regards.

Ok, Click start > click Run > type msconfig > click ok > click the startup
tab > go down to the processes you disabled by uncheckmarking them and
checkmark them by clicking in the box. Also if you've messed with anything
in the services tab then you should click on the services tab > click on
enable all > click the square box next to hide all microsoft services > now
when all the microsoft services are hidden you can go about turning those non
microsoft services off or on. Be aware that Norton and Symantec are both for
your Anti-virus and should be left on. Actually I would uninstall norton
using their removal tool and install Trend Micro's PC-Cillin 2006 Internet
Security Suite. By far the best even better than AVG. Good Luck.

Could I ask you for a little more help, as a young cabinet maker (now
retired) I was taught as a young man to think twice and cut ounce, and it
certainly applies to a computer. On going to msconfig>startup> I find all the
boxes are checked stopped and running, it is some of the stopped ones I need
to change to run. Do I take the tick out of the boxes where needed and then
do as you suggest in the Services tab.
Thanks
Ray
