I want to change my start up settings, but when I try to run 'msconfig' nothing happens, it used to work, Iv'e scanned for viruses but found nothing. Can I change my startup settings another way?

I actually prefer to use the registry instead of the
msconfig - mainly because msconfig is not found on all
computers and regedit is. run REGEDIT and explore to
the following two key locations:
hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
and same last part, but in the hkey_local_machine\softw...

These two locations function the same as the STARTUP folder
under your Start/Programs/ - all items load on normal
boot. (be sure to clear garbage out of the Statup
location too)

Understand that in the Registry, changes are instant - no
backup = no recovery - so before making ANY changes, export
the key that you are about to alter. Save it to a
reasonable location with a reasonable name, and if your
changes are detrimental, simply find the file and run it to
restore the key to original condition. and begin pruning
again - a bit more gently...

Anyway- sometimes these locations could contain over 15
items - mine only has 2 - virus load, and virus def manager.

Usually the garbage found here will be associated with web
pages that took advantage of you - spyware/adware/etc. - or
"auto-update" apps for things like Real Audio or Quicktime.
Kill those. Restart your system and see the difference.

pretty much anything that bases itself on the RUNDLL - kill it

If you don't recognize it or can't make sense of the name,
try saving a 2nd or 3rd iteration of the key before
removing, so you can have manual "restore points" to come
back to if something goes wrong.

"...msconfig is not found on all computers..."

It's found on all computers running Windows 98 and later.
