"Black Viper" on the net strongly recommends using services.msc rather than
msconfig. Anybody care to comment on this?

MSCONFIG is intended as a troubleshooting tool.
You should disable the program directly and not from MSCONFIG as a permanent
fix.
Some programs will create a new entry in MSCONFIG if the other is disabled.

He's speaking only about "services" not the other functions that
msconfig provides. When accessing services from msconfig, all you can
do is either enable or disable all services and\or disable all non
microsoft services. The services.msc dialog has many more options to
choose from and is the correct way to start, stop, auto, manual, any
service. Look for yourself and compare them both.

JJ,

Thanks for your efforts to help, but quite frankly, when I read your reply I
had the feeling that you were assuming that I know alot more about Windows XP
than I do. Your statements seemed to be out of context, and standing alone
they didn't get through my thick skull.

On the other hand, I did get something out of CS's post.

Thanks to both of you.

It is possible to disable the RPC and Event log services from msconfig,
(you can't do this from Services.msc).

By disabling these services, Windows will be rendered unbootable. The
blaster virus (2003) worked by crashing the RPC service, thus rendering
all infected machines unbootable.
