msconfig & regedit won't open

I suspect I have a virus (so much for Norton protection!),
but in the outside event that I don't, here's my problem.

When I try to run either msconfig or regedit, their
respective windows open in a flash and then disappear.
they are not just minimizing themselves; they are
disappearing all together. (If you're wondering why I'm
running these particular programs, they are part of the
troubleshooting routine from Norton. The same thing may
happen to other files, I'm just not aware of it.)

Thanks in advance.

Have you actually run a virus scan? You never mentioned
that you had, so I figured I'd ask. If the scan comes up
negative, chances are that you don't have a virus. Norton
is one of the best security software companies out there,
so they do give good protection.

What exactly do you mean by "they are part of the
troubleshooting routine from Norton"? I have Norton
Internet Security 2004 Pro (includes Anti-Virus), and I
haven't seen a troubleshooting routine within it.

Thanks, Nick, the problem seems to be solved. I wasn't
able to run a virus check because I did have a virus that
had effected my Norton. I downloaded the remove tool from
Norton and it fixed the problem. (Interestingly, though,
after I ran the remove tool I decided to do a full-system
scan and it found an additional 118 files infected with
the very same virus the remove tool supposedly removed.
Go figure!)

Anyway, I'm up and running now (knock, knock...).

The "troubleshooting routine" I mentioned was from one of
the articles on the Norton website.
