msconfig question

Under the Startup tab in msconfig, I've tried to shut-off: msmsgs
(messenger?), AOL8.0 (don't use AOL and I've uninstalled it from my pc) and
MS Office (understand it is a memory hog & doesn't need to startup each
time).
Each time I've unchecked these, when I restart it warns that I'm now
starting in "Selective" mode. Is it OK to run WinXP in Selective mode
instead of Normal?
I have 2 programs I'm trying to stop from stalling on exit from WinXP: ccApp
(Norton AV?) and explore.exe (or explorer.exe), but not sure that's possible
from the Startup tab in msconfig.
I have WinXP Home (version 5.1) SP1.
Any help appreciated

You will always get the 'selective mode' warning when you
make alterations to the startup tab in msconfig. It is an
easy way of politely telling you that you have disabled
items for troubleshooting purposes. After a while the
message will disappear as it gets used to the items you
have unchecked not being loaded. The warning is to remind
you. It has no detremental effect on the way windows
works.
Explorer.exe is the main windows shell and is required by
windows to run, so you will not be able to disable this
function. Try uninstalling Norton AV and see if that
makes any difference. If this cures the problem then you
have two options: either reinstall Norton AV and hope the
problem doesn't return (although you could check for any
application updates from the norton web site - i'm
meaning updates to the program, not virus definition
updates) Alternatively, you could change your anti virus
software. One good one, and incidentally it is free, is
AVG anti virus available from www.grisoft.com You need to
give them some details, i.e., email address etc and name
and grisoft will send you a product code. When you get
the product code just install the software.

Hope this helps

John,
AVG will work with a DSL connection, no problem.
It won't work on a multi-PC network with shared drives,
is what I think they mean by that warning.

Thanks, Chek!! I downloaded the trial 7.0 version, but decided not to
install it until I heard back on this.
