MsConfig - no System.ini / Win.ini

Hi to you all,

I recently made several changes to my Windows XP 2002 Home edition system in
which I keep updated with auto updates and sp1 & sp2. Briefly the changes
involves replacing a dvd-rom drive with a dvdrw drive, installed Roxio EMC 8
Suite & Nero express 6 OEM suite 3. I also converted my FAT32 to NTFS.

I also Have Spybot search & destroy, Ad-aware SE, and Trend Micro Pc-cillin
Internet Security 2005, installed in my system (these have been in my
computer for some time- not related to the changes). Somehow I was infected
with a virus/trojan that was causing my computer to run very slow. After
checking some of the KB articles I initiated the steps outlined by Dave
Lipman by using Stinger, Ad-aware, and my existing Trend micro, along with
spybot S&D to remove this infection. Somehow in the process or by my error I
lost the info that was listed under the "System.ini " Tab and "Win.ini" Tab
when running Msconfig and thus opening the window for the System
Configuration Utility. How do I recreate, recover, or is this even
necessary? The reason I'm concerned is because I also been having a problem
with the new DvdRw drive. It seems like everytime I place a disc in the drive
and the tray closes, nothing happens (other than the light coming on for a
few seconds). When I click on to "My Computer" the windows opens, but there
is nothing in it. The msg soon appears that it is not responding and
eventually my computer hangs up to the point where I have to perform a hard
abort. Upon restarting everything appears fine, until I use the drive and
the tray closes, again, the same hanging and then hard abort. What also
bothers me about this is that I have windows setup to prompt me for what
action to take regardless of what type of disc is inserted (Music, data ,
etc). That window is not even appearing. Device manager shows that drive is
there.

Because of the recent changes I am uncertain as to what is causing my drives
problem (yes, it is affecting both drives (2nd is cdrw - been there since I
got computer)). So I am asking for help!!! Is the missing info causing my
drive problem, or it is unrelated? Can I recover or recreate what once
appeared under these two Tabs?

Finally, everything did work at one time, before I converted from FAt32 to
NTFS, which of course now adds to my confusion as to what is causing which
problem. I am not that computer savvy, Therefore I may need to be guided
somewhat in resolving this problem. Thanks for any and all help . Oh, Yeah,
as always, if more info is required, I'll do my best to provide it.

See if you have a system.ini and a win.ini file in the %windir% or
C:\WINDOWS.

If not see if you have a system.ini.backup and win.ini.backup file in
%windir%\pss or C:\WINDOWS\pss. If you do, copy both system.ini.backup and
win.ini.backup and paste into %windir% or C:\WINDOWS and change the names to
system.ini and a win.ini

I don't see how this will help with the drives problem, but should help with
the system.ini and a win.ini problem.

Both the systemroot\System.ini and
systemroot\Win.ini files are not required by Windows XP and
these files are maintained only for compatibility with older software that
does not use the registry to save settings. The System.ini file is used to
start and store information for drivers and services; the Win.ini file plays
a similar role for applications.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the info. Ok, I went to C:\WINDOWS\pss and there were the two
backup files you mentioned. However, upon copying and pastings to C:\WINDOWS
and attempting to rename them I was greeted by an error message that
indicated that I couldn't rename them since they already exist. This
confused me since I could not see any such folders/files with that name.

I appreciate the brief explanation, but if I am having DvdRW & cdRw drives
problem wouldn't info regarding drivers be related?

Anyway, the error msg says they are there, so why do I not see them? I just
see the backups. Please advise. Thanks! Also please bears with me if I'm not
grasping things readily. I was a little confused at first when I read your
response. Thanks

What opens when you type or paste the following lines in Start | Run and
click OK?

%windir%\system.ini

%windir%\win.ini

Hello Again,

Upon pasting "%windir%\system.ini" (without quotes) in Start | Run and OK
a window openned with the title "Windows - Notepad ". There was nothing
visible in this window, and cursor was blinking in top left corner of this
notepad. The same occurred when I pasted "%windir%\win.ini" except title of
window was "win - notepad".

OK. You have system.ini and win.ini. But both of the files are empty.

Copy both system.ini.backup and win.ini.backup and paste on to your Desktop
and change the names to system.ini and a win.ini. Move them both to
C:\WINDOWS

When you get the...

Confirm File Replace
This folder already contains a file named 'fill in the blank'
Would you like to replace the existing file
blah, blah
with this one?
blah, blah

Click YES TO ALL to replace both files.

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the help. Your suggestion worked. After pasting and changing
names on my desktop I was able to drag and drop into the windows folders.
Checking Msconfig, the missing info has been restored. I truly appreciate the
help, Thanks again.
