Are there better programs/utilities (free, share, or $-ware) than
msconfig.sys to tidy up all the programs that run at startup? If so,
what are they? Why are they better?

Thanks loads,
Geo

Check out the Startup Control Panel program at
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml. Hope it does what you are after.

Good Luck

Since MSCONFIG is intended for troubleshooting, it is a lousy way to
control start-up of applications.
Some applications will create another entry if the original is
unchecked.
Thus I have seen some applications several times all but one
unchecked.
Go to the application, look in "Settings" or "Options" for something
like "Load at start-up".
Anything other than the application is no more than second best.

Second best, you are exactly right The best way to turn off any startup
applications is to go back to the application itself and turn it off there.
On the other hand, they can be handy tools for evaluating startup programs
and discovering spyware. As you said, intended for troubleshooting.
