msconfig - disabling startup programs

I'm trying to clean up my system after my granddaughter triggered a bad
attack of adware. I've run Adaware, but have discovered a bunch of programs
in the Startup tab of msconfig that look suspicious. Definitely some were
part of the attack (but might have been removed by me via Uninstall before I
ran Adaware.) My question is how to get rid of the "You have temporarily
disabled....." message at boot time. I understand that I need to remove
shortcuts, group_policy settings or uninstall for each entry to get this to
go away. Are their techniques for figuring out where an executable
originated, or how to find a short-cut or group_policy setting that is
associated with an unwanted executable in the startup list? Is there no way
to simply remove them from the list instead of just unchecking? Perhaps
there is another forum somewhere dedicated to tracking down invasions?

There's a little checkbox down the lower left of the "System Configuration
Utility" popup that appears when you log on that says "Don't show this
message or launch...."
Check that before clicking ok.

If you go to the startup tab of msconfig
Click in the middle and press the ctrl key with the + key (the one on your
keypad).
The columns will expand to show you the location of the item in question.

The location column shows you the location of the command or shortcut that
causes that particular program to run.You need to go to that particular
location and delete the relevant entry.
The command column shows you which particular file / executable is being
started.
