Would someone please let me know the W2K command that is
the equivalent of the MSCONFIG command. I have a word
document that comes up everytime I boot, and I can't find
where it is coming from. I know there is a command that
will show me everything that is started when Windows
starts. It shows other information as well.

Thanks,
Richard

Greetings --

MSConfig is/was a Win98/Me utility, brought back in WinXP, which
is also targeted at the home consumer market. There is no equivalent
utility included with Win95/WinNT/Win2K.

In most cases, one need only open the offending program and
deselect the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to "start
when Windows starts."

To view the list of your start up programs, look in the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up
folders, and in the system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys. These can
also be viewed, if I remember correctly, by right-clicking My
Computer, selecting "Manage" and expanding System Tools-- System
Information -- Software Environment -- Startup Programs. To prevent
any of them from starting at login, you'll have to delete shortcuts
from the startup folder(s) and/or edit the registry. I should point
out that, in order to make such system modifications requires one to
have administrative privileges to the machine in question. I should
also point out that one should not even consider editing the registry
unless he is fully confident that he knows exactly what is going to
happen as a result of each and every change.

Why are you guys messing around wint MSconfig? Go to:
http://codestuff.netfirms.com/download.shtml and download "Starter"
a great free program that'll allow changes in what starts with a
bootup

I suppose because that is what 300% ask for. I don't like it but hey that's what they want.

Why use anything besides Win2K's built-in tools? Regedit is all I
ever found a need for.

There are tons of free and decent startup managers out there. I use
CodeStuff Starter. Recommended.

For the same reasons that people use shovels and snow-blowers instead of just their hands and feet.

That's a very poor analogy, you know. A task that requires only a
basic understanding of the OS and few minutes of thought is hardly
comparable to something that could require hours of physical labor.
(Unless, of course, one stops to think that the snow will likely melt
away the next day, and therefore needs no shoveling, anyway.)

Now that's the ticket. Only one day???

Well, it does depend upon where one lives, I suppose. ;-} But
that's generally the case here at the lower elevations in southwestern
Idaho, when we get any snow at all.

And Greetings to you too!

I guess I'm missing all that fun by living in central Florida.

I don't need those snow removal devices, but I do use Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel and sometimes I have use for msconfig.exe. They make life easier, just like shovels do.

Now... this truly reveals the mind of a man thoroughly experienced in using
Windows... :]

Many people aren't comfortable editing the registry. MSConfig,
StartupCPL, Autoruns, and similar programs put a comfortable interface on
the process and help you find all of the locations where startup
information may be lurking. StartupCPL in particular makes it easy to
remove an entry temporarily and then put it back or to move items from one
category to the other. All of this can be done with RegEdit, but doing so
is a lot more work and prone to error.
