I have removed the blaster virus and now need to install the patch to
prevent it from reocurring (currently don't have SP1 installed).
However when I go to install SP1 I get an error message when it audits the
machine saying that the cryptography service is not started (although under
services it is).

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.

TIA Gerard Mesman

How To Fix The Cryptographic Service Error
Special thanks to Marc Liron for the following:
Are YOU getting the following error when you try to install Windows XP
Service Pack 1?
"Service Pack 1 Setup Error:
Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer"
Or
YOU are trying to install the Windows XP security patch 823980 - in
response to the msblast.exe worm and you are getting a similar error
message.

Hi Gerard,

Open Windows Explorer to C:\Windows\system32, right-click/rename the
catroot2 folder to catold. Then retry the SP1 installation. When finished,
there will be a new catroot2 folder and you can safely delete the old
renamed one.
