MS Word without menu bar

I recently came across a Windows ME machine with an MS Works package
installed that included a copy of MS Word 2000 SP1. The unusual thing is
that there was no menu bar visible, nor could one be persuaded to appear
at any time, when Word was running.

Ruler bars would appear when the mouse hovered near the top or left
window borders and I could get some toolbars to appear but I could never
get the standard menu (File Edit View etc.) to come up. I even repaired,
de-installed and re-installed it from CD with no effect.

The program ran normally otherwise.

Can anyone tell me what might have been going on. Is there any way to
repair this? Very difficult for the user to do much of anything. I've
never seen something like it before.

Just for the record, some news readers do not display the parts of the
message that follow the signature separator. Remember to move the separator
when using that shortcut :)

You mean the "--"?
Well, I'll be...

Why would someone design something to remove a signature?
Thanks for the tip.

Who can fathom the minds of software designers, and the requirements of some
users :)
I was only reminded of it by the fact that I use OE-Quotefix, which attempts
to make sense of long threads and your message didn't appear to have any
content - until I looked more closely and saw that you had used a proforma
sig. with the response.

I have recently been introduced to the wonders of QuoteFix by a fellow MVP
in the newly created French private NG... So I am new to it myself.. What is
a Proforma signature?

TIA

By this I meant a signature that includes the answer to a question, thus you
can reply with a couple of mouse clicks. I have a few of those myself, but I
can never remember what I called them - it's an age thing - and so I tend to
retype as I can type quickly.
