MS Word and Outlook

My wife's computer is running Win98 and Outlook 2000. Lately when she sends a Word attachment(*.doc), it is being received on some but not all email servers as a *.dat and is unreadable
I would like to know why and what is the fix

Change your message format from Rich Text to HTML or Plain Text. You can do
this in Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format
