Hi everybody,

Does anybody know how to retrieve from Outlook's *.MSG the date, the
subject and the actual email address of the sender and then rename
automatically all MSG.files in the same directory? Microsoft Outlook
doesn't support this utility. I've tried to regain this data but
unsuccessfully because MSG is
not a text file.

Thank in advance
/Mac

Hi Diane,

No, they are not.
We move all *.msg files from Outlook to the archive subdirectory
when the project is completed. And then you can only guess the date,
the sender and the subject. The situation seems to be hopeless since
we've gathered over 200.000 messages.

Regards
/Mac

Hi all,

I had the same situation with many outlook message .msg files laying
around in folders, and I didn't know what they contained. Here is a
link to a site which provides a program that renames the .msg files
with the date, subject and from field. I hope this is what you are
looking for:

http://medlem.spray.se/cuztomtoolz/

Here is a brief info about the program:

MsgRename is a tool used for renaming Microsoft (MS) outlook .msg
email format files. In many project environments containing folders
full of .msg files you need to know what the .msg file contains.
Instead of opening each and every .msg file, you can use MsgRename to
rename a whole directory full of messagefiles giving them an
understandable and correct filename. As an example, if you have a msg
file named RE: imp.meet, you don't know when this email was sent, from
who it was sent, and what the real subject of the email is. Using
MsgRename your .msg file will get the following name format:

DATE AND TIME # FROM # SUBJECT

The name of your .msg file after using MsgRename would be:

2004.01.20 11.25.03 # (e-mail address removed) # imp.meeting!

MsgRename enables you to quickly understand what the Outlook message
is all about. Using date and time in the new filename MsgRename
enables you to sort your emails chronologically.

Sincerely,

B.M

Hi Dave,

I got it working!
It's amazing, your program does the things that MS Outlook
wouldn't manage.
One more time great thanks.

Best regards
