I recently developed a problem with my Windows XP with a WMI file that was
corrupt - After reinstalling Windows (System restore didn't work) and
Microsoft Office 2000 I realized that all of my documents and contacts are
gone - is there a way to get them back. I do have a complete system back-up
from 2004 (whoops!), but I can't figure out where the contacts would be in
the MS Office et al folder in that back-up! Why wouldn't the contacts and
Word documents carry over after the re-install?

Why?
A clean install erases everything. Everything.

From your backup (being 2 years old - may not be worth it):
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURPROFILE\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Likely a PST there. Copy it. Open it with Outlook.

Shenan - thanks for your response, however, once restoring the .pst file over
to my C drive, I am unable to open the file. It opens as a file icon in a
inbox meesage. When I try to open that file it says that I have to find an
association for it. I went into My COmputer file types as instructed and
clicked on pst to no avail.

First - make sureit is not "Read-Only".
Second.. Open Outlook, choose (from top menu):

File --> Open --> Outlook Data File
Direct it to the file.
Select the file.
Open the file.

Shenan - all it gives me is a blank contacts window

It does not import the information.. It opens another folder within Outlook.
Make sure you are in the "Folder" view and look for the other "Personal
Folders" main level folder. Look in there.

You can import the information, but I would only do it once you verify it
exists.

Shenan - don't ask me to repeat how I did it, but I managed to import the
contacts back in another way - thanks for your help!!
