If the pop-ups appear even after installing NIS or any other firewall, then
it might be configured incorrectly. The ultimate aim is to block the TCP
ports responsible for messenger transmit.
Enable the Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP:
1. Open Network Connections
2. Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to
protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this
connection.
3. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select the
Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this
computer from the Internet check box.
This blocks the TCP ports responsible for Messenger data tranmissions and
prevents Pop-ups.

Get gray popups, small and huge, say MS Messenger top
left corner and every one telling my my system may be
vulnerable and to go to an ever-changing array of
websites to purchase pop-up blocking software:
w.popuppadlock.com, w.adblocker.com, w.endads.com,
w.defeatmessenger.com. Have changed security settings,
upped everything on Norton and Firewall, everything I can
find to do to get rid of these stinkers. They first
showed up 10/17/03 when I was surfing ebay. Ideas?????
