Through the "Automatic Update" system, MS is trying to install Service Pack
2, despite the fact that it is already installed and has been for ages.
What's going on and how can I get rid of it?

Try Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with
Windows Update.

There is an option to look a History of Updates installed there.

Hope this helps.

Brian;
Are you sure it is the same SP-2?
Many products such as Office also have Service Packs.
Are you sure SP-2 is successfully installed?

If you are referring to Windows XP SP-2:
Right click My Computer and click Properties.
Does it say "Service Pack 2" under System?

Very weird - I did as you suggested and it shows "Service Pack 1". yet I
know SP2 was installed. However I will go ahead and let SP2 install and see
what happens. I have created a restore point so if anything goes wrong I can
(hopefully) get back.
Thanks for the info.

System Restore will remove Windows XP SP2 if selected not long after
installing SP2 for a date before it was installed.
