In Alberto <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

I expect it to go into extended support in which updated security patches
will be applied. To understand it simply look at Windows 98 and see how long
the support lasts. You will no longer get free support, it's called a life
cycle but it's pretty standard really, and when that extended support (if
that happens) ends that will be it.

Alberto;
A lot of FUD is starting to go around, probably started by the Microsoft
critics and continued by the ignorant..
For the facts:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx
Service Pack 3 for both Windows XP Home and Pro comes out the 2nd half of
this year.
And...
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps
The Service Pack adds at least another year.
Add to that Windows XP Home and Pro are identical when it comes to updates
and patches.
While it may get to a point where no patches may be specifically made for
Home, none are now since patches apply to both, patches made for Pro will
take care of Home.
There is no distinguishing difference between patches made fore one or the
other since there is only one set.

If I read the link given correctly it says this... "SP3 for Windows XP
Home Edition is currently planned for 2H 2007. This date is preliminary."

So is the service pack you talk about being moved ahead to be released
this year (2006) instead of 2007?

or did I misunderstand this?

Phil;
I must have misread the article.
Either the year has changed or I always read it as 2006.
In any event a scheduled Service Pack release indicates continued support.

It specifically says second half of 2007.

Yes I saw that after Phil's post.
But I think it was changed because I also never saw another part until last
week.

Have a look here... http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/

Basically it just means that there will be no patches provided, other than
certain highly critical security patches. Also, free telephone and online
support directly from Microsoft will no longer be offered (most people get
this type of support from their computer manufacturer anyway.) Keep in mind
that XP will have been out for 5 years at this point, and Windows Vista will
hopefully be on the market (or at least, close!)

With XP Pro, you would potentially get a few more years of 'extended'
support (security fixes + availability of paid support contracts) but this
is really geared at business who tend to stick with older versions.

While it may get to a point where no patches may be specifically made for
Home, none are now since patches apply to both, patches made for Pro will
take care of Home.
There is no distinguishing difference between patches made fore one or the
other since there is only one set.

But Windows update may well not allow you to install the patches since
you are not running the "Pro" edition.

It specifically says second half of 2007.
And do you really believe that in a year and a half that
they're actually going to be releasing another version
of XP home with Vista on the market?

Uh.. sure.

Windom

Yes, I sure do. Guess you haven't been around very long to see the history.

Tom

Even if support for Home would end, what you suggest is not what has been
done in the past.
Patches may not be created for Home, but patches created for Pro would also
apply to Home.
Home would get the patch simply because it was the same patch as Pro.

Windows 2000 service packs 3 AND 4 were released AFTER Windows XP came
out so what is it you have a problem with believing?

Microsoft would be making a big mistake, if I am reading everything correct.
Vista is basically for the new double processors, and I think there is
actually a triple. They would be isolating a lot of users who don't have the
new processors yet, possibly costing them customers when they do upgrade.
