MS Email Viruses

Read the post from Lyn from Oz about phoney Microsoft
emails. I've been getting 5+ PER DAY for weeks now.
Thank God I knew not to open them.

Was wondering about the remove instructions- I didn't
quite understand that. I'd like to get rid of these
people forever. I have Norton firewall and virus
protection and a great program I just got called MailBox
Filter, but it still worries me a little, cause many of
them do have viruses in them. Why me? How did they
decide who to target? Didn't used to get hardly any
spam. It's only one email box that gets all this garbage.

The instruction said: "lmee(remove)han@dead-as-a
dodo.com.au" Is that correct? What do I DO with this?
I can't open the email and write back, obviously.

Is the new spam law going to help at all?

Thanks for all your help.

what "instructions" are you referring to? Who wrote this?

Do not ever repond to emails like this, especially pressing the "remove
me" link as they only announces to the spammer that your email address
is "good". It will only attract more email.

New spam law will not help us today. Probably the law
will not help in future. They will find other ways.
These people spend all day working on schemes. Use the
filter tools and just delete any message you do not
expect to recieve from anyone.

Might consider getting free throw-a-way address for
giving out. Try yahoo.com and iwon.com. Use your
standard address for family/friends/trusted sites.

Ha! At one point recently I was getting 1500 per day!

They didn't. They target everyone they can find.

NEVER follow ANY instructions in a spam message. That includes instructions
on how to get taken off their mailing list, just ignore them. If you respond
in any way they know that email address is monitored by a person who reads
their email and they will just send you MORE.

If the instruction to which you refer come from someone you know then they
are saying that you need to delete "(remove)" part to get their real
address. They put that bit in to fool computer programs that look on the
web for email addresses to send spam to.
Is the new spam law going to help at all?

Probably not until every country in the world has the same law - and even
then there will be ways to avoid getting court err caught.

New anti-spam law... If this works, I have a nice little plot of land in
the swamp for sale. Other comments are defiantly (sic) applicable.

If ALL your messages have Microsoft as sender, look in Tools>Message
Rules>Mail... and create a rule to delete ( I do it at the server.). Other
options exist, like coloring, either wanted or unwanted mail.

If the spam really bothers you, you can get a new email address,
preferably from an ISP with spam filtering, MSN is one example among
many.

You are getting these because you either used your reall address in a
public location like these newsgroups or a website, or Someone with your
address in their address book has opened the file and got infected. You
won't be able to tell who because this virus selects a name from the
infected address book to place in the "From:" feild.

Get a Throw-away address like a Hotmail or Yahoo account to use for
public e-mail. Websites and such so you can abandon it if it starts
getting flooded with spam. Give your real E-mail address only to friends
and people you trust.

NEVER!!!!!! open an un-solictated e-mail attachemnt. Even if it appears
to be form someone you know. Always verify with the sender that they did
send it to you. As, many virus's e-mail copies of themselves without the
infected users knowledge.

Remeber, Companies like Microsoft Never, Ever send patches by e-mail
unless you have specifically requested it. And, I don't mean by a check
bnx on a website. I mean you talked or e-mailed a support tech about a
prolbem and he said he will send you a patch. And, this is seldom. Most
simply refer you to a link on their sites where you can download the
patch.
