MS DNS Versus other versions

Hey All,

Can anyone tell me where I can find detailed information comparing the
advantages and disadvantages of using MS DNS in a Windows/XP environment
over the other versions of DNS (Unix, QIP, NetWare)? All of our clients are
Windows XP (SP1), and Windows NT 4.0 SP6a. We are using AD integrated DNS,
and are currently in mixed mode.

I would be very grateful for any information.

Thank you,
Reggie

I'm not going to google for you today, but I'll share some
info you want...
detailed information comparing the
advantages and disadvantages of using MS DNS in a
Windows/XP environment

You have to keep in mind that MS is moving away from WINS
and in to DNS for name resolution. This is actually very
logical since DNS allows for a "tree" structure to be
created, it is perfectly suited to handle AD.

Once you start to use DHCP, and still need to access
machines that are given dynamic IP addresses you will find
it far easier to use MS DNS and DHCP than to try and use
other solutions. Once it's set up, it's all automatic,
hopefully :)

The MS product also has nice functionality by itself (ie:
for use without AD). It supports replication, forwarding,
caching and "round robin". All of these features are nice
to have and not all DNS soltuions have all of them (I'm
not familiar with ALL products and ALL versions).

It sounds like you are using AD and supporting customer
sites with AD. If you want to access their AD, then
having them use MS DNS and you using MS DNS should make
that a lot easier (VPN or not).

Hopefully by the time I've had the chance to finish this
(took no fewer than 6 calls while writing) others have
posted links to more detailed reviews :)
