I am trying to put together a powerpoint presentation with mp3s in the
background. However, when I try to put an mp3 file into the
presentation, it says "Powerpoint could not insert a sound from the
selected file."

When I try to play these in mplay32.exe, I get "cannot determine the
device type from the given filename extension"

I've never had problems like this before (though this is the first time
I am attempting to do so on my new laptop). What's happening, and how
can I fix it??

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What is the file extension?( If you cant see it go to windows explorer>
folder options> view and untick hide file exts for known file types) You can
convert mp3 files to wavs (which often work better) with no file size
increase with a free prog called cdex info here

The extension is mp3. I know I can convert to wav, but I'd like to
figure out why the mp3 is not working.

Where did the MP3 come from? What codec was used to make it? (Yes there are
several differnt codecs for an MP3.) Does it contain DRM?
