Having a problem getting this page to display properly. The videos are
in standard MPG format but the page insists I need the Quicktime
plug-in. Which, even if I wanted Quicktime on the computer, I can't
find. I can download the videos themselves using NetTransport but I'd
like to be able to access the page normally. Any ideas? Using W98.

Looks like the page has rendering problems in Mozilla 1.7.5 too (and I'm
using ME). I can't even right click and save the files because links to
them don't appear. Left clicking on the "Click here to get the plugin"
sends me to this site:

http://plugins.netscape.com/plug-in_finder.adp?mimetype=audio/mpeg

where I get this message:

"There were no plugins found."

Using Firefox 1.0.3, I get sent to this page:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/

Maybe this is a question that could be better answered in:

news://alt.fan.mozilla/

or in:

s
On the other hand, I just opened the site in Internet Explorer without
any problems. The files appeared and played perfectly, but they opened
in Windows Media Player Control version 6.4.07.1128, and I'm using Media
Player 7.1 on my system. As pages go though, it's very benign. No
hijackers, BHOs, etc. I even tried disabling ActiveX, closing IE,
clearning out my cache and cookies, then restarting IE. The page still
loaded correctly.

Appears to me that Media Player Control only works in IE.

This is some very neat stuff. A six-legged, walking vehicle. Looks
almost organic!

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Without studying the code my *first guess* is that the code is not W3C
compliant. I have not looked at the code but from JC's post, the site
working properly in IE but not the variants of Moz makes me believe non-
compliant HTML.

Just a guess though. I am far from an HTML expert.

Ok, after looking at the code, it was written for IE.

Works okay in Mozilla 1.7.7 on XP. But you have to install of course the
quicktime-plugin. And for that you have to install QuickTime. If you
don't want that, okay, but don't blame the site or Mozilla.
On what do you base this site is written for IE? I looked at the code,
and it's absolutely not written for IE. It just has quite a lot of
errors in the code, among some pretty stupid basic errors.

You can find plugins for Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox on this address:

Peter, that site isn't much help I'm afraid since it doesn't appear to
be maintained anymore. It still lists Quicktime 5, and the current
version is 7. Regardless, using Quicktime Alternative works great as I
mention in another reply to the OP in this thread. You just need to
ensure that a few settings are correct.

I found the solution.

Assuming that you've installed Quicktime Alternative (the version of
Quicktime from Apple duns you mercilessly to upgrade to the Pro
version), shut down Mozilla and do the following:

1. on your menu there should be a shortcut for "Quick-time settings".
Open it.

2. Left click on the button at the bottom labeled "MIME Settings..."

3. Put a checkmark next to "MPEG - MPEG system, video, and audio files"
as well as "MP3 - MPEG layer III movies and streams"

4. Click the "OK" button.

5. Close the "Quicktime Settings" window by clicking on the "X" button
in the upper right hand corner.

Now you can restart Mozilla, load the page and view the files by
pressing the play button under each. Be sure to give the page and the
files enough time to load enough to stream at least.

Hi John,
I just had to reinstall XP because of a really stupid mistake I made. So
just yesterday I got all the plugins from that site. The versions they
show are indeed very old sometimes, but if you click on the links you go
to the side from Apple, Acrobat Reader, etc., and you get there the
newest versions.
But they should update that side more often, because this is not good
marketing for Mozilla/Firefox.
Regards
Peter

My thoughts exactly. On the other hand, maybe MoFo should take this over
assuming they have the human resources to do so.

Thanx...I am so used to MIME being automatically configured, I had
forgotten about that. Looks like I was schooled :)

Thank you kindly. It worked. Do you feel like trying another one?

http://www.sakakibara-kikai.co.jp/products/other/LW.htm

G-Spot and FFdshow (with Media Player 2) handled the shooting one but
G-Spot (2.1 with W98) can't identify the video codec for the walking
one. Even downloaded and done offline. It plays fine in IE.

Download the codec here:

http://gabest.org/codec.php?type=1&guid={33564D57-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}

Apparently it's a "Windows Media Video 9" file.

As for me, I stay away from anything having to do with MP9 or greater.

Well, to be fair, you do not have to *use* WiMP, but I always update the
codecs, anyway. It is a big hog...

Once again, thanks. Dang. If you lived in the Vancouver area I'd owe
you a couple of beers by now. :)

I *hate* installing anything from M$ and don't trust any of their
Media Players above 6.4. I figured if you suggested it there was a
good chance it was free of phone home, spyware or any of the other
shit they're famous for.

Gonna be fun figuring this out when I finally switch to Linux.

You mean that WMP9 is a big hog I presume. And I know that using MS's
newer codecs isn't the same as installing WMP9 or newer (actually, I use
ME so WMP9 is as far as I can go), but I still don't trust MS very much
when it comes to media related matters.

Frankly, I'd like to totally remove WMP, all versions of it, from my
system but there would probably be problems as a result of doing so.

Wine might help, the program "Wine" that is.
