when I reinstalled winxp, I fouled up somehow and instead
of it replacing a bad version on drive C, it put a new
one on drive E. Now I wonder if it is possible to move it
from drive E to drive C, or if I just have to wipe
everything off the hard drive and put in a new version

Owen,

Jerry already wrote it, and I agree. Flatten the installation
and start over.

In fact I once did move an installation from D: to C:, but the
task is huge, awkward, risky, and can, in theory, not be done
perfectly (because software may keep drive letter references in
places you cannot find and adjust).

I have a similar question. I have WinXP on "D" hard drive and Win98se
on "C" drive. I would like to do a clean install of WinXP on "C" drive
and then migrate programs and data from "D" to "C" over a period of
several weeks. Then I would format "D" and use it as a second drive
for the WinXP on "C". This seems fairly simple, but maybe I am missing
something?

Also, I guess technically, one copy of XP would be illegal during the
transition? And how about activation issues? Would the new XP on "C"
drive require activation?

Jimbo,

this is a different problem. The original poster wanted to move
the existing installation, rather than creating a fresh one.

In your case all depends on what you mean by migrate. If you
mean reinstalling each program on the new drive, no problem. If
you mean to somehow transplant the installed program, that's
rather difficult and sometimes impossible.

I'm not sure if you can legally install your XP twice on the
same computer, but I suppose that it's no problem anyway when it
is done for a short time to migrate the installation.

The new XP would definitely require activation, and it is
possible that you have to call Microsoft and explain that you
reinstalled from scratch. You will then be given an activation
code over the telephone, so that's not a big problem either.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I would install all of my programs on the
new XP installation.
