If this isn't the proper group please accept my apology. Moving to a new
computer.

Presently running XPhome on a partitioned HD. Have an external firewire HD
for backup.

New rig will have XPpro. Wondering the best way to move my programs,
favorites etc.

My thinking is to partition the new hard drive. Reinstall all the programs
from the original CD's. Pick up the data, Eudora mail boxes and folders,
Outlook Express news groups and folders , drivers, and saved My Document
items from the backup.

Wondering if XPpro will recognize the XPhome backup program. What am I not
seeing? I am an old man and somewhat forgetful. Any thoughts, pro or con,
better ways to do this etc., will be highly appreciated.

thank you

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard helps you move your data files and
personal settings from your old computer to your new one, without having to
go through much of the same configuration you did with your old computer.
For example, you can take your personal display properties, folder and
taskbar options, and Internet browser and mail settings from your old
computer and place them on the new one. The wizard will also move specific
files or entire folders, such as My Documents, My Pictures, and Favorites.

a.. To open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start, point to
All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
(<< Copied from XP Pro Help)

I understand that the Backup utilities are identical in XP Home and Pro
(just not installed by default in Home edition).

I agree with Philip Herlihy.

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will provide the best way of
moving your data files and configuration settings to the new computer.
Installed applications and device drivers cannot be moved in this way,
they will have to be reinstalled on the new computer.

Run FASTW (in Accessories - System Tools) on the XP Home machine and
save the file that it creates to a new folder named Transfer on the
external firewire HD (assuming that this will also go to the new
machine.

On the new machine install whatever drivers etc that may be necessary
to run the Firewire drive on it and then connect the drive. Next run
FASTW and tell it to import the saved file from the Firewire drive.

Former MVP Gary Woodruff has an in-depth article on using the FASTW
which you will find at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Good luck
