moving mail

Erik

Maybe someone here can help me with this. I've tried
searching the "Knowledge Base," but it's a daunting
task. I have Outlook 2000.

I made a mistake the other day. I was trying to file
some email messages to another folder, and when I right-
clicked for the "move to folder" option, I selected the
top-most in the hierarchy, "personal folders,", not a
newly created sub-folder. I don't do a lot of email
filing, BUT WANTED TO START, so didn't know the ropes.
The emails disappeared from my inbox, but where the heck
did they go? I thought, logically, they would appear as
sub-items in my Outlook shortcut bar, but they were just
gone. I did every search you could think of, but without
property info, got nowhere. Just right-clicked the
email, clicked "move to folder," selected "personal
folders," and I can't find the target. Items moved to
other folders or locations in "personal folders" sub-
hierarchy are there.

Where is this root folder? What is the extension or
search criteria for an email?

THANK YOU FOR ANY REPLY!

1) use advanced find to search the top level folder
or
2) right click on it, choose properties and uncheck the box on the folder
home page tab. After you get your messages restore the check box to show the
outlook today page.

Thank you for the fast reply, Diane. You're a Goddess.
But I'm a bit out-of-date on these things, you'll have to
be a bit more rudimentary with me.

I can't find the top-level folder. It's in Outlook
somewhere, which allegedly includes my Inbox, Deleted
Items, Sent Items, Drafts, etc. If that's indeed where
it went.

I can't find "Personal Folders" to search it. Where
is "advanced find" you refer to? Is that part of
Explorer I was using before. There is so much embedded I
can't place anything.

THANK YOU FOR THE FAST REPLY!

Ok... top level = Outlook Today. Right click on the Outlook Today icon in
the Outlook bar or folder list and choose properties to use method #2. To
use Advanced Find, look on the tools menu for Find > Advanced Find. Click
the browse button and select the folder Inbox is under. It's probably called
Outlook Today, but occasionally isn't. Add a check to the box beside it
(remove the one from Inbox) and press find now (after you ok out of the
browse dialog <g>). right click on the messages it finds and move them to
another folder.
