Moving Documents & Settings?

My main HD on this XP Home PC has two partitions: C = System, D =
Data. But I got the balance wrong and now, some 2 years later, C is
getting close to full (9/11 GB) while D is OK (25/44 GB). I
could use something like PowerQuest's Drive Image or Partition
Magic to re-size them, but to be honest I'm a bit nervous of that.

So I was wondering if it was possible to move my entire folder
C:\Documents and Settings to D:\ ? It's about 800 MB and contains
some 17,000 files in 1,200 folders.

Is there any major obstacle please? How is it best done? And are there
any tools to help tidy up the many shortcuts that presently point to
the present path and would all need changing?

Any advice would be appreciated please.

You should get Power Toys and use this to move your Documents and Settings.

Specifically from memory the one you should use is - Tweak UI
This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in
the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer
settings, taskbar settings, and more.

Version 2.10 requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003.

Start > right click My Documents > Properties > Move and choose where you
want it to be.

there is a KB artical on moving all of the D&S folder; use Help And
Support's search feature to find it. Basically, you need to COPY it to
new location, use regedit to fixup all refs, reboot, validate that
everything works and then delete the old. Note that it states "we do not
recommend doing this; but if you must here's how". Good Luck.

Thanks. That's enough of a warning for me! I'll look for other less
risky ways of finding the space <g>.

If you have My Documents shown on Desktop, open Properties of that
icon and select the new destination on D:. It will automatically ask
you to move existing documents from C: to D: for you.
You will have to change shortcuts manually, no easy way to change
them. Also clear out your REcent Documents list via Taskbar
properties.
