We recently bought a new computer system to upgrade our old one (Pentium III
to Pentium IV). Both have Windows XP installed one with the SP2 and one
without.
We want to move all our pictures, music and contact lists from one to the
other, but don't even know where to start. Is there a way we can just link
the hard drives together and just upload from one to the other without
messing up all the upgrades in the new one?
Do Open Office and Microsoft Works Suite interfere with each other?

Here are a few ways to transfer your files:
a) Link the two PCs with a network cable. This implies
that you must configure your network settings so that
the machines can see each other.
b) Use a "carrier" medium in the form of a hard disk in
a USB case, or a flash disk. Even an MP3 player will do!
c) Remove the disk from the old PC and install it temporarily
as a slave disk in the new PC.

OpenOffice and Works do not interfere with each other. Whether
they can read each other's files is another question. Try saving
them as .RTF files.

I suggest tht if you don't know ehere to start, that you employ someone who
does. For someone who doesn't know where to start, its no easy task to
transfer all your stuff to the correct place it needs to be on the new
system. I would suggest that if your old system has a DVDRW or CDRW drive,
i might be easiest just top write all your documents and pictures to
CDR/DVDR and then just copy them across to the new PC.

To complete this whole task properly, it would require someone who does know
'where to start'.....

Have a look at the File and Settings Transfer Wizard (FSTW)...do a search in
Help and Support on the START Menu.

Pegasus is right, you will need a medium with which to transfer the data,
but the FSTW is the mechanism that you will use. It will also move your
Internet Exploer favorites.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you need more help.

I knew there had to be a way to link them together! Thank you. I know how
to make them "see" each other, I just couldn't figure out how to link them
and get the files from one to the other. Now, to get a hold of a carrier. :)

That is what we were originally going to do, but, there are some files you
just can't burn and I didn't want to have to spend that much money on CD's or
ink.

Right on! I've managed to add most of my favourites lists to the new
computer it's just the contacts list from the old Outlook to the new one.
Way too much writing! :)
I had already found the FSTW and figured that it came into play somehow.
It's nice to know that I was on the right track. Thanks!
