I an trying to move a hard drive already installed with
xp pro to a complete new system, new motherboard and
cpu. Hard drive is recognized but system will not
continue. I assume it is because XP is detecting a new
system motherboard, etc. Don't want to lose what is on
the hard drive. Don't know whether reinstalling Xp pro
after the hard drive is installed in the new computer
will fix the problem or just crash it.

Normally, assuming a retail license, unless the new motherboard is
virtually identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE
controllers, same BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair
(a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will probably also require re-activation. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

Bruce,
I am going through the same situation as the person that
you responded to below. If I perform an In-place upgrade
on XP, will it require me to reinstall all the programs on
my PC? (does the registry get overwritten?) Or will it
just update the necessary hardware information that have
changed?
Thanks!

Jon,

if the installer finds the existing installation and offers a
repair installation, it will do the latter. All installed
software, the user profiles, etc., will be retained.

Of course there's always a residual risk of something going
wrong, so it can't hurt to have a backup.

You shouldn't have to reinstall the applications, but you'll want
to check the Windows Update site to ensure that any hotfixes didn't
get over-written.
