Movie files play audio but no video

i have a winxp pro dell laptop. All movie type files
will not play video but will the audio. This includes
Media player 9.x, windvd, and others. File types
are .mpg, avi, etc... any ideas why all of a sudden no
video will play? if i click on the file i can see the
preview pic of it in the side bar, but that is it.
