I have windows installed on the d drive - long story !
anyway the d drive is now a RAID 0/1 drive with 3 other
supporting drives. I now want to copy all files from the
existing C drive which boots from motherboard IDE (non
RAID) and then remove this drive.

I have tried doing this however the d drive will not boot
as it cannot find the drive unless the c drive is
installed. I have tried changing the system bios and have
set the d drive as bootable in RAID bios.

Do I have to edit the boot.ini file to see the correct
drive ? edit something in the bios ? or blow it all up ?

Ross,

if the system was on the second drive (like a slave drive on IDE
or ID1 on SCSI) and now is the first drive, boot.ini needs to be
changed.

To be on the safe side, leave the respective line in boot.ini
and add a new line for the new drive, then test and see if you
can boot.

You need the other few boot files too, like NTDETECT.COM and
NTLDR, and the partition with these files has to be set active
and have proper boot records.

The article at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxMove.htm deals with a
somewhat different matter, but perhaps it contains a few useful
hints.
