I recently upgraded the operating system on my Dell Inspiron 4000 notebook computer from the Windows Me system that came with it to Windows XP Pro. About six weeks after the upgrade, I started having periodic problems with the mousepad in that I could not click on anything even thoug I could still move the cursor around the screen

I suspected a hardware problem, but a diagnostic did not turn up anything. Has anyone had similar problems with Windows XP Pro

Thank you.

I'm not sure a hardware diagnostic could catch a potential problem with a
button. (Does it ask you to try using the buttons?)

- As far as I can remember, the Inspiron 4000 had two pointing devices
(touchpad and touchstick), each with their own buttons. Do the buttons for
the other device work OK?

- Check to see if you have a special touchpad driver installed. This may be
controlling the functionality of your touchpad. (Do you see any icon next to
the clock that looks like a touchpad?)

- When you connect an external mouse, does clicking work OK?
