Mouse scroll wheel not working properly

When I roll the wheel up, the mouse jumps to the left side of the
screen and when I roll the wheel down, the mouse jumps all the way to
the right side of the screen. This happens all of the time, in all
applications. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Take it apart and clean it, or purchase a new one.
 
The mouse is actually fairly new and was working just fine one day and
then this problem started the next day. It is an optical mouse, so
does not need cleaning. Thanks for the idea though. Any others?
 
Un-install the drivers and re-install with the newest drivers
downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

If that doesn't work, please post more information, such as the
computer type, mouse type, operating system, etc.
