Mouse Lock Up

I recently installed a new mouse (Fellows Opti Gel). Now,
perhaps a couple of times each day, the mouse gets
lost/frozen: I have to unplug the mouse from the USB hub
and plug it back in before it will work. when I first got
the mouse, I had it plugged into the PS2 port via a
PS@/USB adapter. When the mouse lock ups started, I
bought the USB hub hoping that would fix the problem. No
such luck. Has anyone experienced this type of problem?
Any suggestions?

Thanks In Advance,
Phil

There are a couple of possibilities here:

First, it could be that you need to update your chipset drivers for your
motherboard. If you post what motherboard you have (make and model), I
can link you to the most recent drivers.

Second, it could be that your power management is turning off the USB
device to save energy. To turn this off, click Start-Run-Type
devmgmt.msc. Now expand the Universal Serial Bus Devices at the bottom
and do this for all USB Root Hubs. Right click on USB Root Hub, click
properties, now go to the Power Management tab and uncheck allow
computer to turn off this device to save energy. Once you have done
that for all of them, reboot and the problem should be gone.

Finally, it could be that you need to uninstall the drivers for your
mouse and reinstall them. This could include the software that came
with your mouse. So do this, click Start-Control Panel-Add/Remove
Programs. Now look for EasyPoint or Fellowes or whatever the name of
your mouse software shows up as and select it and remove it. Now go here
and download and install this software:

Nathan,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have now updated my BIOS.
Tried the automated download and I know that the files
downloades. I just don't know if they automatically
installed or if not, where they downloaded to.

So I also did a manual download of the BIOS upgrade and
installed it.

As for the Power management possibility, the power tab on
the USB hubs all say self powered: No option to "allow
computer to turn off..." Maybe it's hidden somewhere else
in XP?

I had uninstalled and reinstalled the Easy point software
from the Fellowes web site yesterday. WELL IT JUST LOCKED
UP AGAIN, AS I WAS TYPING THIS. So I guess the BIOS
upgrade is not a fix. I didn't have this problem with my
old ball mouse. Do you think I should give up and take
this OptiGel mouse back to OfficeMax?

Hmm, it may be a hardware incompatibility. You can always try a
different mouse. I would return the mouse, get a different one, see if
that fixes the problem, and if not, get the other one back if you liked
it better. The only real way to figure out if there is something wrong
with the mouse and your hardware is if you were to do a clean
installation and it locked up right off the bat. As for the automated
download, I couldn't get it to work since I built my own system and it
isn't an IBM, so I do not know exactly where it saves the files and if
it installs them automatically ;)

Nathan,
I'm going to take the mouse back and see if I can find
another optical mouse that works.
Thanks for your help!

The mouse freezing is a common problem right now. My suspicion is that
windows updates are breaking mouse drivers. Your only fix is to
uninstall all video drivers and mouse drivers. Reboot, reinstall video
drivers, reboot, reinstall mouse drivers. :(
