Mouse freezing and jumping around

I have Windows XP Home. My Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
1.0 is not working properly. It is not a cleaning issue,
as I have done that. It will refuse to move onsceen for a
moment, and then jump to a spot a few inches away,
sometimes opening up another window or two. Sometimes it
freezes altogether and I have to reboot the computer.
Does anyone know the solution? Thank you for your help.
 
Check in your system event log.
This behavior is often caused by a dying Atapi IDE hard disk,
as when the very low level I/O driver for the disk has to go into
retry it starves everything else from getting CPU cycles.
 
Thank you all for your thoughts. I am a semi-illiterate
with my computer. Roger or someone else, can you explain
in brief layman's terms the Atapi, how bad this is overall
for my computer use if true, can I correct it, how? Or
could this be something else? Thank you! PS tried
reinstalling the mouse but that didn't work.
