mouse freezes

My mouse periodicaly freezes for a few seconds. This
happens quite often. Every 10 to 120 seconds. The
computer gives a "ding" when I try to move it, and it
doesn't respond, and another "ding" when it's finished
freezing and the mouse will respond. This seems to happen
mostly after opening or closing an app. All though it
also happens when using an app. It's not specific to any
1 app. If I'm using IE for example, after a page loads,
and I want to scroll, it might give me the "ding" and I
have to wait until it "dings" again in a few seconds
before it responds. The system seems to be "busy"
doing "something else" when it won't respond to the
mouse. If I'm rushing through a project, it gets worse.
Sometimes, even with all apps closed just sitting at the
desktop, I will see the hourglass on the cursor. If I try
to move the mouse at this time, I get the "ding".
I have run current anti-virus scans, ad-aware, monitored
the event manager, I've closed everything on the taskbar.
My HD seems to be busy doing something even when I'm not.
Maybe it's saving data, or doing some backup? My other
computer is a MUCH slower CPU, and I can just fly through
the same apps & projects, it's never froze! I can't
remember when this first started, but it's getting REALLY
annoying! Thanks for any suggestions!

How much RAM does your computer have? How many background apps are
running? Here are some links to help you:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm (to look up the names of
entries you find by using msconfig)
http://www.blackviper.com/ (to learn about processes in XP)

You might also turn off the Indexing Service.

Hi Malke

I think you might be onto something. I opened Indexing
Service and choose to close the "Computer Browser", (my
network is a little slow). It has sped things up
considerably! I can now fly through projects like I used
to! I've been using my computer for about an hour now,
and only had it happen twice, and then only very briefly.
Could I permanantly disable this feature. And how? My
network still works at the same speed, which is OK by me.

Thanks again,
Richard

Go to the link I gave you (www.blackviper.com) and read all about how to
handle XP processes.
